• Rhinoplasty shapes the form and function of the nose, enhancing facial aesthetics while also preserving or improving breathing.
• Commonly known as a “nose job”, rhinoplasty can change the size, shape, or overall appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty at New England Ear, Nose, and Throat can help you achieve your desired appearance while balancing the essential function of your nose – breathing.
Indications
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Aesthetic concerns with the nose such as the size or shape
- Cleft rhinoplasty – history of a cleft lip resulting in asymmetry of the nose
- Feminizing rhinoplasty – adjusting the features of the nose to appear more feminine
Benefits
- Improved appearance
- Improved harmonization of the nose with the rest of the facial features
- Improved breathing through structural modification of the nasal septum or external nose
Functional Rhinoplasty
Functional rhinoplasty focuses on improving breathing. Air flow can be improved by adjusting the structure of the nose, including straightening the nasal septum or the outside of the nose. This can be helpful throughout daily life and especially in situations such as exercising and breathing while sleeping.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
Cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on changing the appearance of the nose. This procedure refines the nose in a way that enhances overall facial harmony, taking into account the patient’s unique background and individual facial features.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is a procedure performed to adjust the results of a previous nose surgery. It can address aesthetic concerns, functional issues, or both, with the goal of achieving a more balanced appearance and improved nasal function.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in an operating room. Dr. Shehan will access the nose through small incisions.
Dr. Shehan uses the most cutting edge techniques and customizes the surgery to fit your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure to reshape or adjust the function of the nose. It can be done for cosmetic reasons, functional purposes (to improve breathing), or both.
What issues can rhinoplasty correct?
Rhinoplasty can address:
- A bump or hump on the bridge of the nose
- A crooked or asymmetrical nose
- A bulbous, drooping, or upturned nasal tip
- Nostrils that are too wide or uneven
- Breathing difficulties due to structural issues
How is rhinoplasty performed?
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions to reshape cartilage and bone. The procedure may be open (with a small incision on the columella) or closed (all incisions inside the nostrils).
How long is recovery from rhinoplasty?
- Initial recovery: 1 week with minimal activity, no intense physical activity for 3 weeks
- Bruising and swelling: Common for the first few weeks
- Final results: May take up to 12–18 months as swelling gradually subsides. The recovery process, specifically swelling, can be prolonged after rhinoplasty. The key is to remain patient and trust the process.
What are the risks of surgery?
Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, poor wound healing, difficulty breathing, dissatisfaction with results, and need for revision surgery. A comprehensive conversation with your surgeon should address these concerns.
Will I have visible scars?
In rhinoplasty, there may be a small scar on the columella (the skin between the nostrils), which usually heals well over time.
Can rhinoplasty fix breathing issues?
Yes. Functional rhinoplasty can correct internal nasal structures (like a deviated septum) to improve airflow and breathing.
How do I prepare for rhinoplasty?
- Understand your goals and expectations for surgery
- Arrange for downtime and help during early recovery
- Follow your surgeon’s pre-op and post-op instructions closely
